Omo-Agege dumps APC after senatorial primary defeat
Verification Status: Pending
Overall Assessment: Pending Verification
Former Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress in Delta State. He announced his resignation in a statement dated May 22, 2026, signed by his media adviser, Sunday Areh, copies of which were made available to journalists in Warri on Wednesday. “Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, Deputy President of the 9th Senate and Obarisi of Urhoboland, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), effective immediately,” the statement read. It explained that Omo-Agege had earlier forwarded a letter to the APC Chairman of Orogun Ward 2, Ughelli North Local Government Area, dated May 22, 2026, signifying his decision. In the letter, the former senator said his resignation took immediate effect. He explained that his decision followed recent political developments within the APC in Delta State and consultations with his political associates and supporters. According to him, remaining in the party would no longer allow him to effectively pursue the political interests of Delta Central Senatorial District, Delta State and Nigeria. “After reviewing recent developments in the party in Delta State and consulting with my associates and supporters, it is clear my political objectives and those of my constituents are better served outside the APC,” he stated. Omo-Agege added that he could not remain in a political party where he would be unable to advance the interests of the people he represents. “I will not remain a sitting duck in a party where I cannot advance the interests of Delta Central, Delta State and Nigeria,” he said. The former Deputy Senate President thanked the APC for giving him the platform to serve as Deputy President of the Ninth Senate between 2019 and 2023. He also requested that his name be removed from the party’s membership records, registers and communication platforms. “I thank the party for the opportunity to serve as Deputy President of the 9th Senate. I wish the APC well and request that my name be removed from all membership records, registers, and communication lists,” he wrote. Omo-Agege, however, said his commitment to the development of Delta Central, Delta State and Nigeria remained unchanged despite leaving the ruling party. “My focus remains on delivering development and effective representation for Delta Central, Delta State, and Nigeria. I will pursue these goals outside the APC,” he added. He has, however, yet to disclose the new political party he would be joining. Efforts to reach his media aide to confirm his new party failed. The resignation is expected to trigger fresh political realignments within the APC and the wider political landscape in Delta State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
